Background
The India Semiconductor Mission launched in 2021 with a ₹76,000 crore outlay to position India as a global hub for electronics manufacturing, design, and innovation. It addresses heavy import dependence by fostering a self-reliant ecosystem covering fabrication, display units, and advanced packaging. The mission supports economic growth, high-tech job creation, and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence.
Mission Goal: To turn India into a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design.
Financial Support: Up to 50% fiscal support for semiconductor fabs, display fabs, and compound semiconductors.
Strategic Need: Reduce dependence on imported chips and strengthen supply chain resilience.
Key Focus Areas: Semiconductor fabrication, display fabs, and the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme for startups.
Progress: By 2025, over 10 projects approved with investments around ₹1.60 lakh crore.
Workshop Topic
Semiconductors power modern digital infrastructure including smartphones, automobiles, defense systems, and medical devices. With the India Semiconductor Mission and a ₹76,000 crore investment, India is building fabrication and design facilities to become a global electronics and semiconductor manufacturing hub.
